GREAT MANHATTAN BRIDGE WALK Start at GW Bridge, end at Brooklyn Bridge. We will walk for about 12 hours and cross over all of the bridges that we can walk over from Manhattan Island. The entire route will be 27+ miles of walking, plus two or three bus/subway rides. Bring plenty of water, sandwiches, snacks, and Metro Card. Moderately paced. MEET: 9:30 AM at the GW Bridge Port Authority Bus Station, in Manhattan by the GW Bridge on Fort Washington between 178th and 179th streets, on the east side of the main floor, near the restrooms. WEST HARBOR WALK For approximately 19-20 miles (8-9 hours) at a moderate-brisk pace we will follow the lesser known Western shore of New York Harbor through the cities of Jersey City and Bayonne, where we will explore Liberty State Park and its historic rail terminal; pass the site of the 1916 Black Tom Explosion, follow boardwalks over old docklands and through restored wetlands with many shorebirds; pass shipping cranes on the shore of Newark Bay; cross the Bayonne Bridge; and pass through the former sailors' home at Snug Harbor, ending at the Staten Island Ferry terminal at St. George (for ferry service back to Manhattan). This new-and-improved West Harbor Walk will take us over several new boardwalks and promenades completed in 2009. As the walk parallels Hudson-Bergen Light Rail for the first 12 miles, walkers interested in joining us for part of the walk may take the train back to Hoboken Terminal at several points. We will stop briefly for lunch in Bayonne at noon at an intersection with several lunch options (fast food, diner, deli). We will go in any weather. (Hike 1) WTC to Montague Street, Brooklyn Easy pace, 4-5 miles, 3-4 hours. Walk along Hudson River, Lower Broadway, Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge and Promenade to Montague Street. (Hike 2) CROTON POINT PARK -4 - 5 miles, easy. Visit this county park where eagles and owls may be spotted. Dress very warmly for the winds that blow off the Hudson. We will walk for 2 hours, followed by an optional lunch at the Croton Diner. Starting time will be 10 AM, but you must call leader for details regarding meeting place. PIERMONT TO NYACK, 9 miles at a moderate-to-brisk pace via a Tallman Mountain loop and a northward trek on the Old Erie RR bed. Terrain: level-to-mild hills, with one steeper descent. Especially cheerful in light snow, these trails culminate in an optional dinner in Nyack. Bring lunch and water. MEET: before 7:45 AM at 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Station, South Wing, at the white commuter statues in the ticketing area. Departure: 8:15 AM outward to Piermont, NY, on bus 9A/Gate 220. (Hike 1) Manhattan: Statues & Outdoor Monuments—Downtown area (Fulton to Houston Sts). Relaxed walking, level ground, child friendly/stroller friendly, slight incline, about 3 hours. Meet at 11:00AM, exit at Brooklyn Bridge—City Hall station on the Pace University side (use the Lexington line) numbers 4, 5, and 6. City Hall Park, St. Paul’s Chapel, Chinatown, Manhattan Bridge, walk over bridge to Brooklyn. Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens. END OF THE LINE WALK -In this series of walks we explore life at the end of the subway lines. This walk was our first which we had to cancel due to weather conditions and will be the last in the series. We begin in Harlem, at the end of the #3 line, and walk up to the Bronx and through Van Cortandt Park following the John Muir Trail (trail condition permitting) ending at the D train, Grand Concourse. THE BRIDGES & WATERWAYS OF NEW YORK’S CENTRALPARK This moderately paced adventure will take you under, over, around and through many of the amazing architectural wonders of Central Park (arches, bridges and waterways). We begin our journey at the southwest tip of Central Park South and zig-zag our way up the eastern half of Central Park to The Harlem Meer at 110th St. Then we circle back along the western half of the park and finish at Columbus Circle. Please bring water and lunch or snack for this fascinating 5-hour trek of approx. 8 miles. MEET: 9 AM sharp at the Atrium entrance to the Time Warner Towers Complex at 59th St. & Columbus Circle. (Hike 2) Historic Public School Buildings Near Brooklyn’s Old Waterfront. We’ll look new waterfront developments and at Progressive-Era schools designed by Charles B. J. Snyder in Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge. MEET 10 AM on the southeast corner of Smith and Warren (at the Bergen St “F” train stop) and cover about 10 miles, with frequent drop-off points. Bring or pick up a lunch. (Hike 3) Greenwood Lake A road walk around Greenwood Lake. With a mountain on one side and the lake on the other, walk past some log homes and marinas. Bring lunch. Distance about 6 miles at a relaxed pace. Take NJ Transit bus #197 to Greenwood Lake, NJ, and Lakeside Rd. (Rt.513) and Greenwood Lake Turnpike (Rte 511). RT bus fare about $19. Brooklyn/Queens Walk-Ridgewood Reservoir From the Bushwick section of Brooklyn to Woodhaven in Queens, we stop at Highland Park for an amble around Ridgewood Reservoir. Bring binocular for early migrants. Then on to Jamaica Avenue passing by the site where Phil Rizzuto and Babe Ruth once played (Dexter Park) and the house where A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was written (house is actually in Queens). Not really a B walk, but some incline gives this walk some oomph. Possible stop at landmark diner afterwards. J train to Gates Avenue and meet at McDonalds (1 1/2 short blocks behind you). Garrison to Manitou 9 miles at a moderate pace.. A linear hike along one of the Osborn loops connecting into the Appalachian Trail. There it descends from Canada Hill into Manitou. Forested, rolling hills with climbs. At Manitou, we follow Mystery Point Road northward for an extended shore view. Walk through Erie-Lackawanna Terminal, beautiful views of Manhattan’s westside, magnificent 100 year old buildings, Castle Point Terrace( Stevens University), Sibyl’s Cave, the Hoboken Historical Museum and of course the memories and sites of Frank Sinatra. Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens. Meet at 10:00AM, Greeley Square ( 6th Avenue and 33rd Street, Manhattan). This is the Manhattan entrance to the Path Train at 33rd Street. Fare on the Path Train is $1.75 each way. (Hike 3) THE JERSEY / HUDSON RIVER SAUNTER - PART 2 If you’ve been searching for a journey with spectacular views of the Big Apple, but from a different perspective, make it a must to join us on this amazing 14+ mile medium-paced walk. First, we walk across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan; then we spiral south along The Palisades, The Cliffs and The Shores of New Jersey. Later we pass through Historic Hoboken, and finally end our adventure at the newly rebuilt pier near the tip of Jersey (Liberty) City, N.J. Please bring plenty of water, fresh fruit & nuts for energy, and/or lunch for this visually stunning, 7+ hour “mini-saunter.” We return to Manhattan by PATH ($1.50 fare). THE GREAT SAUNTER
Cool, beautiful and long
On Saturday, May 1, 2010, Shore walkers will hold its annual Great Saunter-a 32-mile walk around Manhattan’s rim. The pace is steady, but not fast. Most of the route is fairly flat. We keep to the waterside as much as possible. No rain date. Many of us will make it round, regardless of the weather. We walk through more than a dozen parks, and touch a dozen cultures. There are many points from which you can easily join in or drop off and catch public transportation.
The following are approximate departure times. Times vary depending on the pace of the walkers, so from the Circle Line Terminal and after be at your start point 30 minutes ahead of time to sign in and join the other walkers.
7:30 AM: (Start) At Fulton & South Streets, in front of the Heartland Brewery near the South Street Seaport
7:45 AM: South Ferry Concession Stand outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal
9:45 AM: Circle Line Terminal at W. 42nd St. & 12th Ave.
11:20 AM: Riverbank State Park: By the bus stop inside the park, near the northern end. W. 145th St
1:30 PM: (Lunch) Inwood Park: At South Flagpole (near the park entrance at Seaman Ave. & Isham St.)

THE JERSEY / HUDSON RIVER SAUNTER (PART 2)- If you’ve been searching for a journey with spectacular views of the Big Apple, but from a different perspective, make it a must to join us on this amazing 14+ mile medium-paced walk. First, we walk across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan; then we spiral south along The Palisades, The Cliffs and The Shores of New Jersey. Later we pass through Historic Hoboken, and finally end our adventure at the newly rebuilt pier near the tip of Jersey(Liberty)City, N.J. Please bring plenty of water, fresh fruit & nuts for energy, and/or lunch for this visually stunning, 7+ hour “mini-saunter.” We return to Manhattan by PATH($1.50 fare). MEET: 9:15 AM at the Information Booth in the GW Bridge Port Authority Bus Terminal (178th St./Broadway). By Subway: Take the “A”Train to the 175th St. Station. Rain cancels!
