Explore your shores and wild waters.  See marshes, meadows, beaches, streams, ponds, oceans. Wear sturdy shoes; dress in layers.  Bring snacks, water, extra socks, and a hat.  Foul weather may cancel; if in doubt, call hike leader.  Walkers must be physically fit and waive all rights and claims for damages against Shorewalkers. All walks and expeditions are free to members, unless otherwise stated.  We ask guests for donations.

Saturday, May 10, 2008 (Two Hikes)

(Hike 1) ROOSEVELT ISLAND Historical walking tour/photography tour.  Meet 9:45 AM for 10:00 AM start, at Tram Plaza at 59th Street and 2nd Avenue.  See entire island -- historical ruins, apartment complexes, commercial district. Many photo opportunities.  Lunch at local restaurant (or bring your own lunch).  About 8 miles round-trip, moderate pace, or take the island bus for $0.25 ($0.10 for seniors!).  Return via tram, or subway, or bridge to Queens and subway. (Hike 2) JONES BEACH WALK Health walk on boardwalk and then beach walk to Roosevelt Nature Sanctuary, followed by visit to fishing pier to seek regal birds and perhaps seals.  Take the 9:12 AM train from Penn Station arriving Wantagh at 10:03 AM.  (Check schedule with Long Island Railroad.)  Drivers appreciated for shuttle to beach.  Rain cancels.  Call leader to confirm hike will take place. NYACK-HAVERSTRAW ALONG THE BATT-TO-BEAR TRAIL AND HUDSON RIVER About 9 ½ miles along the Hudson Shore below Hook Mountain. Walk past mansions in upper Nyack by Broadway and then through Nyack State Park to Dutchtown and into changing Haverstraw. Catch 10:30 AM bus at GW Bridge bus terminal (178th St & Broadway). THREE BRIDGES AND LUNCH IN THE PARK Meet outside Thomas Jefferson Recreation Center at 1st Ave and 112th Street, at 10 AM.  (To get there, take the #6 IRT to 110 street and walk east to 1st Ave and up 2 blocks or take the M-15 bus to the Center.) Walk over 104th Street Footbridge to Ward’s and Randall’s Island. Then we’ll cross over to Astoria on the Triborough Bridge.  We’ll have a picnic in Astoria Park, so bring your lunch or pick up food at a local deli.  Then we will walk south through Queens to the59th Street Bridge, and back to Manhattan.  See Hell’s Gate Whirlpool, Hell’s Gate Bridge, and other interesting sights.  There are drop-off points along the way. THE BRIDGES & WATERWAYS OF NEW YORK’S CENTRAL PARK This moderately paced adventure under, over, around and through many of the amazing architectural wonders of Central Park. We begin our journey at the southwest tip of Central Park South and zig-zag our way up the eastern half of Central Park  to The Harlem Meer at 110th St. Then we circle back along the western half of the park and finish at Sheep’s Meadow. Please bring water and lunch or snack for this fascinating 5-hour trek of approx. 8 miles.  MEET: 9 AM sharp at the Atrium entrance to the Time Warner Towers Complex at 59th St. & Columbus Circle. (Hike 1) HARRIMAN STATE PARK  A 12-mile hike/saunter on many forest-enclosed trails – some rock- strewn, along running brooks, others passing pristine, gemlike lakes.  We will encompass Lake Sabago, Dutch Doc, Lake Skenonto, and Claudius Smith Cave prior to a Tuxedo return.  Meet 8:00 A.M. at Port Authority Bus Station, South Wing at the white commuter statues.  We take the Short Line North Wing 8:30 A.M. bus O/W to Sloatsburg, NY (gate 312).  Total fares about $16 for seniors with blue coupons, and double for regular tickets.  Bring lunch and water.  (Hike 2) SCENIC FIRE ISLAND TOUR -- PINES TO ATLANTIQUE AMC CAMP Visit the Pines, Cherry Grove, and Sunken Forest.  Lemonade provided at AMC camp.  Swimming and showers available.  Reduced camp fee, $5.  Take the 7:48 AM train from Penn Station to Sayville.  Drivers park at Bayshore Station and board 8:59 AM train to Sayville.  Meet at Sayville platform and take taxi and ferry to the Pines.  Return by ferry from Atlantique or Ocean Beach to Bayshore.  Rain cancels.  Call leader to confirm. (Hike 1) THE JERSEY / HUDSON RIVER SAUNTER - PART 2   If you have been searching for a journey with spectacular views of the Big Apple, but  from a different perspective, make it a must to join us on this amazing 14+ mile medium-paced walk. First, we walk across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan; then we will spiral south along The Palisades, The Cliffs and The Shores of New Jersey. Later we pass through Historic Hoboken, and finally end our adventure at the newly rebuilt pier near the tip of Jersey (Liberty) City, N.J. Please bring plenty of water, fresh fruit & nuts for energy, and/or lunch for this visually stunning, 7+ hour “mini-saunter.”  We return to Manhattan by PATH($1.50 fare). Rockland Lake Circular Route: From North Nyack via Hook Mtn to and around Rockland Lake; return to Nyack via shore trail and North Broadway.  Pace:  Moderate to brisk.  Distance:  8-9 miles, 4-5 hours.  Bring lunch and beverage, no food until return to Nyack.  Wear firm walking shoes or light boots.  Meet at 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal, Coach USA/Rockland Coaches ticket windows in rear of South Wing at 9 a.m.  Bus leaves 9:15 a.m. from platform 220 (you can also board at George Washington Bridge Bus Station at 9:40 a.m.)  Cost:  $7.80 OW ($6.75 from GW Bridge bus terminal).  Check your subway station day before hike for possible weekend service changes. END OF THE LINE WALK (Part 4) In this series of walks we explore life at the end of the Subway lines.  In this walk we begin in Forest Hills and end in Ozone Park/Lefferts Blvd.  touching the R,M,F,E and ending at the A or 3 line.  The pace is steady about 10-12 miles.  Bring lunch.  Meet 9:30 Southwest Corner of Queens Blvd. & Continental Avenue.  Take E,F, V or R train to 71st/Continental.  Rain cancels. MANHATTAN ISLAND BRIDGE WALK Start at Brooklyn Bridge, end at George Washington Bridge. The entire walk will be 30+ miles including the 15 bridges with open walkways leading on/off of Manhattan Island.  We will be walking the whole way, no transit in between bridges.  We will, however, be passing by transit at many points, allowing for dropping off.  Bring plenty of water, lunch, and snacks.  Brisk pace.  Heavy rain cancels. MEET:  7:00 AM in the plaza just south of the Manhattan Municipal Building, the big rectangular building just north of the beginning of the walkway over the Brooklyn Bridge.  We will begin walking promptly at 7:15 AM.  Last, but certainly not least, there is NO restroom at the meeting site, and the first restroom along the route is near the third bridge.  Plan accordingly. (Hike 2) THE JEWEL OF BROOKLYN (AKA THE GOWANUS CANAL) -- BY FOOT AND PADDLE Come explore the Gowanus Canal shoreline, an urban industrial waterway sandwiched between the Carroll Gardens and Park Slope neighborhoods.  This narrated tour will cross 4 of the 5 bridges over the canal and cover 400 years of history. Tour ends at the 2nd St. launch where we'll take to canoes to get another perspective (Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club at www.gowanuscanal.org). Slow pace, 2 miles. Kill von Kull Stroll – staten island Walk from ferry along the “new Riviera”, the St. George Upper Esplanade, past steps to nowhere, last plantation house Pavilion, Jug Inn, Snug Harbor, tug depots, Farber mansion site, almost to the Bayonne Bridge. See the channel where 14, 000 boats  pass through a year, more than the Panama Canal. As of this writing we are not allowed on the bridge. Take bus back to ferry: 40, 44, or 52. Be at Manhattan Whitehall Staten Island ferry by 9:15am for 9:30am ferry. You may not see me in the terminal as I have just come in from SI and only have 2 minutes to find you. Look for Shorewalker hats in terminal or on left upper deck inside benches. We will also meet at SI terminal turnstiles. Allow an hour extra travel time as construction around South Ferry means no 1 train and sometimes no R or #4 or #5 stops on weekends. For #1 train, take shuttle bus from Chambers Street. (Hike 1) AMAGANSETT TO NAPEAGUE STATE PARK.  Panamuk Path through Pine Barrens and sand dunes. Return to Amagansett along beach. Bring lunch, water, sun blocker and bathing suit. Watch for ticks.  (Hike 2) Terrace Pond Located on the summit of Bearfort Mountain, Terrace Pond is surrounded by cliffs of purple conglomerate walls, scrub pines, and rhododendron thickets, looks to be of another time.  Starting at an elevation of 1100 feet we ascend another 350 feet on this approximately 5-6 mile hike. (Hike 1) CONEY ISLAND TO MANHATTAN BEACH  Easy walk along boardwalk from Coney Island through Brighton Beach to Manhattan Beach. Bring bathing suit for a quick swim at Manhattan/Brighton  Beach. Convenient drop-out points. Bring lunch and water. MEET: 10:45 AM at Nathanʼs on Stillwell Ave., across street from F/N/Q/D subway station. Rain cancels.  (Hike 2) Figure-Eight Lake Hike – STATEN ISLAND Walk up international Victory Boulevard to Polish deli, Nigerian grocery, or Mexican shops to Silver Lake and golf club stop, then on to three Clove Lakes. Zoo optional. Hop on bus back to ferry at ancient Tulip tree or walk back to ferry along coast. Be at Manhattan Whitehall Staten Island ferry by 9:15 AM for 9:30 AM ferry. Look for Shorewalker hats in terminal or on left upper deck inside benches. You may not see me in the terminal as I have just come in from SI and only have 2 minutes to find you. SHORE PARKWAY GREENWAY  Start in Howard Beach, Queens and walk both sections of the Shore Parkway Greenway (along the Belt Parkway) winding up (21 miles later) at Owl's Head Park in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Optional return to Howard Beach or intermediate drop-off point. Several drop-off points available but Greenway can be isolated for periods.  Moderate to brisk pace.  Bring water and bring (or buy) lunch.  Bad weather does not cancel, but may shorten. (Hike 2) INTERNATIONAL EXPRESS   A 7 mile trek from Asia to the Americas with stops in India, the Philippines, Mexico, and China as we journey under the International Express --the Flushing local No. 7-- through the most ethnically diverse area in the world. Enjoy an early lunch at an ethnic restaurant; tour the Louis Armstrong Museum, observe the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival.   Meet at 10am. Take no. 7 train to 40th St. in Queens. TALLMAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK CIRCULAR  7 miles.  From Piermont, NY we will hike south through the park on an eastern leg, and return with the Long Path back to Piermont.  There, we’ll walk the mile-long Piermont pier, halfway across the Hudson.  Bring lunch and water.  Meet 9:00 AM at the South Wing of the Port Authority Bus Station, by the white commuter statues.  Fare: Round-trip about $7.70 for seniors and $15 for regular tickets.  Depart gate 220, bus 9A at 9:22 A.M. (Hike 1) ROCKAWAY PARK BEACH HIKE AND SWIM Walk along boardwalk from Beach 116th St. to end. Easy pace, 5-7 hours. Bring lunch, water, and bathing suit. MEET: 10:45 AM at subway station at Rockaway Beach Park at 116th St. Take JFK A-Train to Broad Channel, change for S-train at Broad Channel.  (HIKE 2) Straight Through the Straits – staten island Walk from the Staten Island ferry terminal to Miller's Field, via the Lighthouse Museum, Alice Austin House, Verrazano, Ft. Wadsworth, and the FDR Boardwalk. Bring lunch and Metrocard.  Back to ferry via SIRR train or 51 bus. Be at Manhattan Staten Island ferry by 9:15 for 9:30 ferry. You may not see me in the terminal as I have just come in from SI and only have 2 minutes to find you. Look for Shorewalker hats in terminal or on left upper deck inside benches. We will also pause at SI terminal turnstiles. Allow travel time as construction around South Ferry has no 1 or R and sometimes no 4 or 5 stops on weekends. THE JEWEL OF BROOKLYN (AKA THE GOWANUS CANAL) -- BY FOOT AND PADDLE Come explore the Gowanus Canal shoreline, an urban industrial waterway between the Carroll Gardens and Park Slope neighborhoods.  This narrated tour will cross 4 of the 5 bridges over the canal and cover 400 years of history. Tour ends at the 2nd St. launch where we'll take to canoes to get another perspective (Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club at www.gowanuscanal.org). Slow pace, 2 miles. Monday, September 1, 2008 (Two Hikes)

(Hike 1) LEATHER STOCKING TRAIL AND SAXON WOODS  Moderate terrain, Larchmont – Mamaroneck area. Pleasant scenery and lush greenery. Distance 9 miles and duration 4 ½ hours. Bring lunch and water. Also bring sun blocker. MEET: 9:15AM, Grand Central. information booth (upper level) fare $14.00, seniors $9.50. Take 4,5 or 6 train to 42nd street station. Leader: Ray Krant

 

 (Hike 2) JONES BEACH   4-6 mile walk on boardwalk and some trails. Bring bathing suit for possible swimming. Also bring lunch, water, and suntan lotion. Old shoes or slippers are good idea, because we will be walking the beach. Meet at 12:00 noon at Freeport LIRR Station waiting Room. Take the LIRR train arriving Freeport at 11:46 AM (leaving Penn Station at 11:02 AMor Jamaica Station at 11:24 AM – check IRR for schedule changes). Fare: $6.75/$4.50 c.w.,plus Metrocard for bus. Saturday September 6, 2008 (Two Hikes)

(Hike 1) NYC MARATHON WALK Walk most of the route of the NYC Marathon, starting at 94th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn and ending at Tavern on the Green in Central Park (Manhattan), including 4 boroughs and 4 bridges.  Total distance is not quite 24 miles, but there are countless drop-off points.  There will also be an optional "off-marathon"extension of the walk.  Moderate to brisk pace.  Bring water and bring (or buy) lunch.  Bad weather does not cancel, but may shorten.  MEET: 8 AM in front of "Hot Bagels" at the corner of 5th Avenue and 94th Street, in Brooklyn.  (Across the street from Staples.)  Take R train to 95th Street Terminal, which is at 4th Avenue. (Hike 2) TALLMAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK  7 miles.  We follow the long path northward through Tallman Mtn. up to Piermont, NY.  Here, we intersect and take the Old Erie R.R. bed to Nyack.  Generally flat to mild hills, with  one steep descent. Optional dinner in Nyack.  Bring lunch and water.  Meet 8:50 A.M. at the South Wing of the Port Authority Bus Station, by the white commuter statues.  Fare: Round trip about $7.80 for seniors and $15.60 for regular tickets.  Depart gate 220, bus 9A at 9:15 A.M., outward to Oak Tree Road on 9W.  (Can also depart from the GW Bridge Bus Terminal at 9:40 A.M.)  Call to confirm, and for any schedule changes.  Joint hike.
