Walk with Shorewalkers

Since 1982, SHOREWALKERS has led thousands of walks exploring shore areas throughout the Greater New York City Metropolitan Region. We are a member-driven, non-profit organization relying on the support of our friends and members, such as yourself. In addition to leading more than 100 walks every year and organizing unique events like the Great Saunter, SHOREWALKERS works to develop new trails and parks around New York City. We also organize and lead hikes and walks in the surrounding areas of Northern New Jersey; and Orange, Rockland, Long Island, and Westchester counties in New York State.

We rely on the support of our generous members and donors to continue doing our work in the following areas:

1. THE GREAT SAUNTER
An annual event held on the first Saturday in May every year, in which people from New York and other states and countries meet to celebrate the waterways and waterfront parks of Manhattan. We walk along the entire rim of Manhattan (32 miles) and experience it in a way that they have never seen before. The Mayor, Speaker of the City Council, and Borough President have proclaimed the first Saturday in May as the "GREAT SAUNTER DAY" .

DONORS TO THE GREAT SAUNTER INCLUDE: CON EDISON, ANN SCHWARTZ & FRIENDS, FRIENDS OF HUDSON RIVER PARK, ROMA WINES AND SPIRITS, THE DURST ORGANIZATION, HEARTLAND BREWERY, RIVERSIDE SOUTH PLANNING CORPORATION, CLEARWATER FESTIVAL - GREAT HUDSON RIVER REVIVAL, RIVERSIDE PRINT - BEST GRAPHICS PRESS, DIVE BAR, JIM THOMPSON - SHOREWALKER, GRASS ROOTS, GOWANUS DREDGERS CANOE CLUB, TIME WARNER CORP, THE RIVER PROJECT, TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES, NEW YORK RESTORATION PROJECT, NY WATER TAXI, STUYVESANT COVE PARK, AND HEARTLAND BREWERY, AS WELL AS MANY GENEROUS INDIVIDUALS.

2. GREAT SAUNTER WALKING PATH
We are working to establish the Great Saunter walking path through over 20 parks and promenades around the rim of Manhattan. Your support can help to make this a permanent trail for people to use all year round.

3. BATT-TO-BEAR TRAIL
Establishing and marking the Battery Park to Bear Mountain Trail along the Hudson River. This 56 mile trail, scouted and developed by Shorewalkers, is a wonderful, healthful resource for everyone in the New York Metropolitan Area.

4. GRAND HARLEM RIVER PARK/RECREATION AREA AND TRAIL
Developing and establishing the Grand Harlem River Park/Recreation Area and GHRP trail. The project aims to integrate all the parks around the Harlem River in the Bronx and Manhattan, and link them together with a 14 mile trail. Work with Shorewalkers to build awareness of this area as a potential site for a fantastic water park will help us find local, state, and federal support for this area as a legitimate park and trail.

5. HARLEM RIVER VALLEY MAP + GUIDE
In 2007, Shorewalkers published a four-color, multifold, large scale map + guide of the Harlem River Valley to develop civic awareness of this area. The HRV Map + Guide will help reconnect neighborhood communities to the waterfront as part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's citywide waterfront Greenway initiative.

DONORS TO THE HRV MAP PROJECT INCLUDE THE LITTAUER FOUNDATION, NEW YORK CITY ENVIRONMENTAL FUND, NEW  YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONVERSATION, THE HUDSON ESTUARY PROJECT, NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL THROUGH NEW YORK CITY COUNCILWOMAN HELEN FOSTER.
