WALKING THE “OLD CROTON AQUEDUCT SYSTEM IN MANHATTAN

Relaxed walking, child friendly/stroller friendly, level ground, four to five hours. MEET:  10:00AM at New York Public Library (5th Avenue and 42nd Street). Following the path of the “water system” we will walk up Fifth Avenue to Central Park and enter the Park at 60th Street and end the walk at High Bridge Tower (Amsterdam Avenue and 173th Street). Drop off points all along the walk. Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens. Heavy rain cancels. Call Friday evening until 9:00PM, if weather is a question. Nyack to  Haverstraw. A moderately paced hike of about 10 miles along the Long Path. We take a bus from the George Washington bus station at 175th. st. to Upper Nyack and follow thw L.P. to  Haverstraw.. Bring lunch and something to drink. If time allows, we will take a ferry from Haverstraw to Ossining and return to the city by Metro North train; otherwise, we will take a bus from Haverstraw to return. Walk along streets and through parks connecting interesting things in Plainfield, Fanwood, Westfield, and Garwood ending in Cranford.  This is the last of the alternate route WANJ hikes. Great Manhattan Bridge Walk

Great Manhattan Bridge Walk 27 miles, moderate pace, 12 hours. Start at Brooklyn Bridge, end at GW Bridge. We'll walk over all of the bridges on which one can leave Manhattan Island by foot. Bring Metrocard for 2 or 3 bus/subway rides (in addition to the 27 miles of walking.) Bring water & lunch/snacks to eat along the way. Heavy rain at start cancels. Brisk walkers only. Will walk most of the Marathon route, starting at 94th St. and 4th Ave., Brooklyn and ending outside of Tavern on the Green in Central Park, Manhattan, including 4 boroughs and 4 bridges. Total distance is not quite 24 miles but there are countless drop-off points. There may also be an optional “off-marathon” extension of the walk. Bring water and lunch (or will stop to buy). CONSTITUTION ISLAND: FAMILY DAY

Strolling, sightseeing at a gentle pace. This legendary gem on the Hudson, opposite West Point, is open only 3 weekends per summer. Take Metro North (Hudson Line) from Grand Central to Cold Spring and MEET approx. 11AM (time depends on what the new train schedule will show for train arrivals before or close to 11AM) at the parking area south side of train station, for transport to the island. Bring photo ID. Expect entrance fee of $10, covering free boat rides, guided walks, or independent exploration. Amenities include shaded picnic groves, public restrooms, a gift shop in the historic Warner House, walking trails, and a hot dog vendor. Departure time is optional.(*Alternatively, meet at 10AM at parking lot at North White Plains Train Station for car pooling. Donate $5 to the driver. We take a Metro North train from G.C.T. to Peekskill for this moderate 10 mile hike in this pleasant park, which is a hilly and rocky area. Hiking boots therefore advisable, bring lunch and something to drink. Views of the river and the Indian Point electrical generating station and maybe early fall foliage.
