Cross the Bronx

This hike has been cancelled.

Route: 10-12 miles, brisk pace, pavement, residential neighborhoods NOTE: we cross one bridge over open water  Breaks: restroom/food breaks (short) Bring: water, snacks (will be places to buy along the way too)

We will start in Manhattan, cross the Washington Bridge at East 181st, and then walk across the Bronx following the route of the infamous Cross Bronx Expressway, which is generally acknowledged to be the most intrusive road in the city. Many neighborhoods were bulldozed and buried to create this road. On this walk, we will explore the unique community fabric, odd street layouts, and beautiful parks that have developed on either side of this poorly planned roadway.

We will essentially cross the Bronx with the Cross Bronx, starting at Washington Bridge and ending where the Expressway ends at Throgs Neck. We will see the section of the Cross Bronx that is slated to be redone as a tree-lined boulevard. We will end at a park in Edgewater at the Bx8 bus which goes to Buhre Ave on the 6 line and also connects to several BxM buses.

In case of extreme weather, we cancel.

Contact hike leader directly if you have questions about the hike.

Meet: 10:30AM 181st Street 1 Train station (Manhattan, 181st and St. Nicholas Ave, across the street from Chase Bank) End: Bicentennial Memorial Park (Bronx) by the Bx8 which connects to the 6 Train and several BxM buses. Check for weekend subway route changes here: MTA Weekender ( http://web.mta.info/weekender.html)

We will be taking short breaks, but will try to keep a fast pace to finish in about 4 hours. Drop out points:
