The Benefits of Grand Harlem River Park

The Harlem River, a man-made salt-water strait, can become a park larger than Central Park lined by a six-mile long salt-water strait. This project would improve freight and passenger transport, reduce air pollution in New York City, enhance open space, and more...

ENVIRONMENTAL & OPEN SPACE:

  • Create a world-class park -- as big as Central Park --in the Bronx and Manhattan that integrates parks and promenades on both shores of the Harlem River-Spuyten Duyvil Strait,

  • Increase bio-diversity; encourage wetland flora and fauna,

  • Expand development of salt-water marshes in the Hudson Strait at the northern and southern Terminus of the river,

  • Improve quality of life in the area of the South Bronx, East Harlem, and Washington Heights,

  • Conserve and protect shore areas for use by local neighborhoods and visitors,

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Reduce vehicular congestion in the vicinity of East and Central Harlem, approaches to the bridge and South Bronx Areas. Reduce air pollution,

  • Spur use of freight trains to Manhattan’s West Side, reducing diesel truck use, noise, air pollution, and damage to city streets,

  • Encourage use of the 2nd Avenue Subway by providing a park-and-ride facility in the 126th Street -Willis Avenue area. Reduce number of autos in the CBD. Improve air quality,

  • Develop new bikeways and walkways between the South Bronx and Manhattan. Link greenways along the Hudson. Develop continuous greenways around the perimeter of the revived Harlem River.

  • Provide fast ferry service throughout the area

ECONOMIC:

  • Create jobs.

  • Increase land values and taxes in areas surrounding the park,

  • Stimulate industry in the area, and spur economic development in adjacent districts.....$$$.
